Tom Ferguson Independent Porsche Specialists in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear Project overview

The workshops area of this Porsche Specialist Garage was lit with ten (10) 400 watt metal halide box Lobay luminaires. The fittings were quite old and a lighting survey showed an average level of illumination at 280 Lux with the highest recorded value of 315 Lux.

We carried out design calculations and produced detailed installation drawings to show the exact positions of the proposed new luminaires to provide optimum light distribution. A number of different manufacturers products were evaluated and we selected one particular product for closer examination, which included visiting the OEM factory and offices for detailed technical discussions and to see the fittings operating under test conditions.

We finally decided on the fittings, which were 200 watt LED High Bay with spun aluminium 120 degree beam angle reflectors. The new fittings were installed over a two day period without any disruption to the ongoing work on the Porsche cars in the workshops. On completion, the levels of illumination were measured at 720 Lux in the general area and 500 Lux at the perimeter walls.

The differences in light output can be clearly seen on the photographs of the wall panels around the building . The installed power was reduced by 52% and the Lux levels were improved by 140% which provides a greatly improved working environment, higher awareness of general safety and will provide payback on investment within 14 months.

The new light fittings come with a 5 year guarantee, 1 year on-site warranty, 50,000 hours of maintenance free operation, 22,000 lumens and 4000k colour temperature. The client was highly delighted with his new lighting installation
